Personal training is highly customized to the individual regardless of age, but there are a few additional considerations when working with older adults. Your joints and muscles are probably not as strong as they used to be, so we’ll slowly increase your weight and rep counts to avoid injury.
During our first session, I’ll talk with you about your current fitness level, health concerns, past injuries, and surgeries that may require accommodations. This will allow me to develop a plan that challenges you and keeps you safe. I also offer a unique service where I coordinate with your healthcare professionals to address specific health issues through diet and exercise. My goal is to ensure you have all of the necessary resources to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
If you’re looking for in-person coaching, I offer personal training sessions out of a local San Francisco CrossFit gym. However, my online training sessions can be completed in your home or the gym of your choice.
Online sessions may be a good option for you if you aren’t comfortable driving to the gym or simply want a quieter environment. You’ll still get custom workouts tailored to meet your fitness goals and access to me in between sessions for questions and advice. If we work together for a while, I may recommend purchasing some at-home equipment, but there’s a lot we can do with body weight too.
Typically, an exercise program for older adults will include mobility training, strength training, and low-impact cardio. As you age, it’s normal to lose muscle tissue, so we’ll want to work on building strength and power in a way that’s appropriate for you. We’ll also focus on movements like squats, hinges, and lunges that mimic mobility challenges you’ll face in everyday life. In addition, we’ll throw in some core exercises to promote balance and stability, which are important for adults of all ages. Lastly, agility training promotes efficient muscle movements and improves mobility, so your program may include things like step patterns or ladder drills.

A senior fitness specialist is a personal trainer who has experience working with seniors and creating modified workout programs to fit their unique needs and challenges. There are certifications available that allow personal trainers to specialize in senior fitness, such as this one through NASM. However, suppose a personal trainer does not hold a senior fitness certification. They may still be a good fit for you, but it’s important to ask about their experience working with seniors.
The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, which is similar to their recommendation for younger adults.
Senior fitness can improve your quality of life as you age by improving your mobility and helping you maintain your independence. It can also help manage ongoing health conditions, such as high blood pressure, arthritis, and diabetes.
I worked in the medical research field for over a decade. During that time, I saw countless patients who needed to change their diet and exercise routine for health reasons but didn’t have the tools to follow through successfully. Then I discovered the power of CrossFit and weightlifting in my own life. I felt better mentally and physically than I had in years.
AP Wellness Training & Consulting was born out of my passion for personal fitness and my desire to help my former patients develop healthy habits. Because of my background, I intentionally base my recommendations on the latest advances in fitness research. Therefore, you can trust that I have your best interests in mind and will only suggest safe and proven techniques to help you achieve results.
